Non Fiction Book Club

Non Fiction Book Club, August 2012

The Kirkland-Redmond branch of AAUW sponsors a Nonfiction Book Club that meets monthly September through June.  Members meet in August to select the books for the coming year.  Each member recommends one book and then a vote is taken to determine the 10 selections.  Members are expected to have read a book before recommending it.  As much as possible the person recommending the book will be the facilitator for the discussion of that book.

The group has grown so that we now have two meeting times each month.  One group meets on the third Friday of the month at 1:15 pm.  The other group meets on the second Thursday at 7:00 pm.  While members designate which of the two groups they will regularly attend it is possible to attend the alternate meeting as long as the hostess can accommodate the extra person.

The non fiction book club started in 2007. The first book was Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel.

Books selected for the 2013-2014 year are:

September The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee
October The Swerve: How the World Became Modern by Stephen Greenblatt
November Then Again by Diane Keaton
December My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor
January Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain
February Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland’s History-Making Race Around the World by Matthew Goodman
March Visit Sunny Chernobyl by Andrew Blackwell
April Bolivar by Maria Arana
May River of Doubt by Candace Millard
June South of the Sun by Lynne Cox
