AAUW Washington State Annual Meeting 2013
The AAUW Washington State Annual Meeting was held in Paco, WA on April 19-20 at the Columbia Basin College. Kelvie Comer, Washington State Co-President and a member of the Kirkland-Redmond Branch, opened the meeting and introduced
Lisa Maatz, AAUW Director of Public Policy & Government Relations, as the keynote speaker.
Lisa described the “wildly disfunctional” situation in Washington D.C. that she works with daily. We celebrated the success of the extension of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that the Senate passed in February 2013 by a vote of 78-22 and the House passed by a vote of 286-138 with unanimous Democratic support and 87 Republicans voting for it. Both our WA Senators voted for re-authorizing the bill. LIsa also described her lobby efforts for the Paycheck Fairness Act which is before the Legislature for the 11th time in 22 years.
The Kirkland-Redmond Branch was well represented at the 2013 WA Annual Meeting.
